Conclusion
I think I have always wanted to be a librarian, but didn’t know it when I graduated from high school. If I could turn back time, I would definitely have pursued my MLIS much earlier. That being said, I don’t have regrets about my journey to get to this point of self-discovery and acceptance. I feel like all of my experiences have informed what I have gotten out of this program and have influenced the information professional that I want to be.
While completing this program, I learned a lot about the information services profession and am able to take on more responsibilities than I expected as I completed this program (particularly this e-portfolio) while working along with growing and taking care of my family. I recently started a position at the Orillia Public Library as a User Service Technician, assisting in the development of the new Makerspace and acting as Reader’s Advisory. I am currently enjoying the position and the team that I am working with. Getting real-life practical experience has really enforced the lessons I have learned throughout this program. Moving forward, I am hoping to grow this position into a role as a librarian who works with emerging technologies in some capacity, possibly a Makerspace librarian.
Even with everything that I learned while in this program, I know that there is so much more to learn. The learning process has been really enjoyable for me personally. I enjoy having a project to do as well as the challenges that are associated with learning. After completing this program, I would like to continue some form of education and am also keen to continue honing my skills as a maker and information professional by attending conferences and workshops. Some topics that currently interest me include web development and design, coding, user experience, reader’s advisory, technology, creative arts, graphic design, marketing, and teaching.
To conclude, I want to take the time to thank everyone who has been so supportive of me throughout this MLIS journey and helped to shape this experience into one that I won’t soon forget. Most important my partner Paul who had been my biggest cheerleader since before I started this MLIS. Also my family -Greyson, Dusty, my parents, brother, and in-laws, my current co-workers at the Orillia Public Library, my co-workers from Action Potential Lab- Lisa and Tanya, my friend Melanie, all of the instructors and the fellow students I have had the pleasure of working with while studying at SJSU, and my e-Portfolio adviser, Sue Alman.
